I'm sure that everyone saw Serena Williams meltdown, so I will not post a clip; however, I do want to discuss a few things. There's so much pressure to be someone's role model and I believe that NO one should have that much pressure on them.
I was watching The View and it made me think about peoples unrealistic expectations for others. A couple of the ladies argued that when you're in the spotlight you're a role model and that Serena's meltdown was extreme.
Although, I agree that Serena's behavior was explosive, I don't believe that she should be looked at any differently. People have meltdowns all the time, in sports and in real life.
I think that parents should start explaining to their children that REAL people become frustrated, angry and sometimes say things that they don't mean. It doesn't make a person any less and they shouldn't be looked down on. It's no different from people who aren't in the spotlight. I know that I have had a few temperamental moments. I have also done things that I'm not proud of, but I would hope that those who I influence understand that I'm not perfect and yes, I have and guaranteed will make more mistakes in life.
When we as people began to expect PERFECTION from celebrities and individuals then we began to get disappointed and are let down in life, because NO one is perfect, as it doesn't exist.
When I was a little girl, there were four people that I looked up to besides my parents. I looked up to Tina Turner, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston. Throughout the years, they have all been through hardships, but fortunately my parents explained to me at an earlier age that my celebrity idols would let me down.
They weren't trying to be insensitive, but they told me this so that I understood that celebrities are not God and are human beings. I appreciate them being honest and explaining to me the TRUE meaning of "idolizing" someone because I still admire those celebrities without ever being disappointed. According to
The American Heritage Dictionary, idolizing means to
regard with blind admiration or devotion. In my opinion no one should ever be blind when looking at someone.
